Are Braces Right for You?

Braces are often a good solution for patients with concerns that impact their smile or interfere with daily functionality. Braces are a valuable investment in oral health and can help fix a range of issues, including jaw alignment. If you’re experiencing any of these issues, braces may be the right choice for you:

  • Crooked teeth
  • Crowded teeth
  • Significant gaps between teeth
  • Overbite, Underbite, or Crossbite
  • Overjet
  • Openbite (your teeth don’t touch when you bite down)
  • Clicking Jaw Noises
  • Cutting your tongue or cheeks on your teeth

Types of Teeth Braces

If you or your child has decided to straighten your teeth with braces, the next step is choosing the type that best suits your needs. Your dentist or orthodontist can help you make this decision.

Metal Braces

Metal braces are the traditional option, consisting of stainless steel brackets which are bonded to the front surface of each tooth. Wires attach the brackets to each other in a line. In addition, rubber elastics connecting the upper and lower braces help correct the alignment of the jaw. The elastics can be switched to give your smile a bit of color. An orthodontist will adjust the wires at each visit, allowing your teeth to shift into the desired position over 18 to 36 months.

They are highly effective for children and adults and are generally the most affordable. Metal braces also give your orthodontist a higher level of control over your results, so you can be sure that, in the end, you have the smile you want. Plus, the rubber bands come in fun colors, so you’ll always have something new to smile about.

Ceramic Braces

Ceramic braces are a more subtle alternative to metal braces. An orthodontist uses brackets that match the color of your teeth’s enamel, making them less noticeable. They are a comfortable alternative but more suitable for adults because they are more brittle than their metal counterparts.

Clear Aligners

Clear aligners like Invisalign are almost undetectable and an increasingly popular choice among adults who want a discreet alternative. You wear multiple sets of them that gradually shift your teeth over time. You only remove them for eating and brushing. This option is great for adults but not as suitable for children, who may forget to wear them or accidentally misplace them.

What to Expect When Getting Braces

Your smile is SO important, friend. It’s the first thing people notice about you, and the first thing that draws others in your personal and professional life. Studies show people with attractive smiles have more success in life.
